COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to further your study in Algebra. This course will prepare you for Algebra III/Trig or College Algebra. Topics that will be discussed in this class are real numbers, polynomials, rational expressions and functions. Along with the traditional class work and homework, calculators and computers will aid the student in the successful completion of this course. The Algebra II textbook will be our main resource for the information that will be presented and learned in this course.
MATERIALS
These materials are required in class daily :
CALCULATORS
Students will need to bring a calculator with them each day to class. I do not have calculators to lend out. Students may not share calculators when taking a test or quiz. Graphing calculators may be rented from the school for $20. (see Mrs Otroszko – Rm 1009)
GRADING POLICY
Semester grades are comprised of the four categories listed below and their corresponding weights. The grading scale will be as follows:
90% - 100% A
80%- 89% B
70%- 79% C
60%- 69% D
0 % - 59% F
ASSIGNMENTS/HOMEWORK(10%)
All bellwork, notes/examples and homework will be done in the math spiral. I will grade the math spirals usually once a week. Everything will be graded in the spiral, so I will be looking to see that you do the bellwork, you take notes/write down examples, and do the homework assignments. If there are handouts, they must be in this spiral also when I grade it. You may leave your spiral in the classroom, or you can take it with you. I will let you know ahead of time what day I need the spirals to grade them. I usually collect them on test day.
EVERYONE that is in class the day an assignment is due must do either their homework in their spiral or they must write down an explanation as to why they did not do the homework. An ‘On the House’ pass may be used. ALL work must be readable. If I cannot easily read your writing and follow your work, you will not get full credit. You may also receive NO credit if work is not shown.
If a student is absent from class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to get the assignment, notes, and classwork that were missed. These items can be found on my website, and also in the Class Aid Notebook found in my classroom. When turning in late assignments, you MUST have book section number, date, and assignment written at the top or I will not grade it! Please also put at the top that you were absent, so I know why it is out of order in your spiral.
All assignments are due when I pick up the math spirals. All 'ON THE HOUSE' passes with explanation(s) for missing assignments must be in the spiral at this time as well. If any assignment(s) is/are not present at this time, you will receive a '0" for each one missing.
ORGANIZATION/COLLECTION OF MATERIALS(5%)
When I grade math spirals, I will also be checking for organization of the current chapters materials(notes, homework, handouts, worksheets, etc). I will be checking to see if 1) you have all the materials from the chapter; 2) if they are neatly organized. You will lose points if you are missing materials and/or if they are not organized.
QUIZZES (35%)
Quizzes will be given 1-2 times per week, covering the most recent material learned in class and requiring students to demonstrate knowledge of the content. Students who have an excused absence the day of the quiz will have two days to make up the quiz during office hours or seminar.
TESTS (50%)
Tests will be given at the conclusion of each unit of study and will require students to demonstrate their knowledge of the content. Test reviews and/or study guides will be provided to students at least one day before the test. Students who have an excused absence the day of the test will have one week to make up the test during office hours or seminar. Students absent from class the day before the test will still take the test with the rest of the class.
CELL PHONES AND MP3 PLAYERS
Cell phones need to be in one of two places: 1)on your desk and on silent(NOT vibrate); or 2)put away completely in your backpack. If it is not in one of these two places during a particular class period, the first time I will ask you to put it away completely. If there is a second time, you will lose the privilege of having your cell phone on your desk for the remainder of the quarter. I will also email your parents to keep them apprised of the situation.
Music in the classroom---there will be no earbuds in either or both ears while teaching is in session. The only time that I will allow music is when there is individual work time and it must not be bothering anyone around you.
